Hue’s Phu Bai airport, a massive US airbase during the war, serves several Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific domestic flights from Saigon and Hanoi each day. It’s a rather more mellow experience than it must have been in the 60s and 70s. No cause for intimidation now. It's all very friendly and straightforward.
The airport is about 15 km from Hue city and takes about half an hour to get from the airport to downtown Hue. Phu Bai airport was formerly used by the French and the Americans as air force base, but it has been transformed to serve civilization purpose since 1975. Due to its small size, this airport is able to receive only medium-sized planes but in the future, large airplanes can land on its runways.
In 2011, Phu Bai international Airport was scheduled to close for repair and improvement in May and early June, so that all flights bound for Hue are temporary cancelled in 1 month. If you plan to travel during this period, fly to Danang and take a shuttle to Hue, which is a 3 hour trip.
Danang airport is three hours from Hue making it an alternate option for those wanting to combine a visit to Hue with travel to Hoi An and cross the scenic Hai Van Pass. It would be feasible, if not very desirable, to fly into Danang, visit Hoi An for a morning and then drive to Hue in a single day.
From Hue airport to city center
Like other airport, Phu Bai Airport maintains a bus service for passengers to get to Hue city. The cost for one person to use the airport bus is from VND 30,000 to 40,000.
A more convenient, but more expensive, option is to catch a taxi or motor taxi outside of the terminal, which cost on average VND 250,000 and 120,000 respectively.
