By plane

The main international gateways to Southeast Asia are Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. From China, there are regular flights to Southeast Asia from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Cheap carriers from China usually fly to Bangkok, Singapore and Denpasar. It is easy to buy tickets to other destinations in the area from Bangkok and Penang.

By train

The only international rail line connecting Southeast Asia and the rest of the world is between China and Vietnam. There are no train connections between Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries yet.

The China – Vietnam Train

The train ( T5) departs Beijing from the West Railway Station every Tuesday and Friday, and arrives at the terminal station, Hanoi, every Wednesday and Sunday. Stations on the way are Beijing West Railway Station, Shijiazhuang, Zhenzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Guilin, Nanning and Hanoi. The fare for a soft sleeper is 1,100 yuan.

By boat

Many of the round the world cruises make several stops in Southeast Asia with options to go on shore excursions. Popular ports of call include Singapore, Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang, Phuket and Ko Samui.
